Get your local SEO ready before high season, not during it

GMB Horizon·March 22, 2026·3 min

In Tenerife, a good part of the year's business is decided in just a few months. The most common mistake seasonal businesses make is starting to worry about showing up on Google right when they're already swamped with work, and discovering — too late — that online visibility doesn't switch on with a flip of a switch.

Local SEO isn't instant

This is the idea you need to internalize: Google needs weeks to reflect changes. You optimize your profile, start getting reviews, publish new content… and the effects show up later, not the next day. Local rankings are built up through the accumulation of signals over time.

Translated into a calendar: if you start working on your visibility right in the middle of high season, results arrive just as the season is winding down. You've made the effort at the worst possible time.

What to move ahead of time

The rule is simple: plant the seeds two or three months before your peak arrives. These are the actions that pay off most when done early:

  • Review and complete your Google Business Profile before things get busy: updated photos, seasonal hours, services, attributes. With time to do it properly, not in a rush.
  • Get the review engine running as early as possible. Arriving at the season with recent reviews and a good average rating carries a lot of weight in how both tourists and the algorithm see you.
  • Publish content aimed at what tourists will be searching for: "where to eat in [your area]", "what to do in…", local guides. That content needs time to get indexed and start bringing in visits.
  • Check your website on mobile. Tourists search from their phones, often on limited data; a slow website, or one that looks bad, sends them straight back to the map to pick someone else.

Think in your customer's language

A detail specific to a destination like Tenerife: if your audience is international, showing up only in Spanish leaves you out of a huge number of searches. A British or German tourist searches in their own language. Having your presence — profile, website, content — also available in your customers' languages massively widens your reach, but again, it needs time to get indexed and ranked.

Turn preparation into an annual routine

The businesses that make the most of the season don't improvise: they work off a small calendar. They know which month to refresh photos, which one to push for reviews, and they arrive at the peak with everything running smoothly. It's not more work, it's the same work done at the right time.

If next season matters to your business, the time to get your local SEO ready is now, with room to spare, not when your place is already full.
